Ke Kahiau Hawaiian Language Instruction |
|
Check the website periodically. We always offer online classes to all age groups. Sometimes we are at Hawaiian/Polynesian festivals. The instructor can also come to a hälau or hui meeting in most Southern California areas to teach Hawaiian language to members. An email with instructions will be sent to you after payment is received to walk you through the easy preparation to take online instruction. |

The best way is to learn along with your family. There are several different options to choose from and new courses are continually being developed so that it can truly be a venture for the entire ‘ohana. You can also learn for yourself, and try and teach your ’ohana what you learn in class. This is also a great way to solidify what you are learning with Ke Kahiau; by teaching, the information becomes more pa’a (solidified) in your own understanding. |

The answer varies for every individual. It depends on the amount of time a student devotes to language study/practice, personal aptitude, desire to learn, and other factors. A student is expected to apply what is learned so that language acquisition occurs at an accelerated, steady pace. To become proficient in the language at an intermediate level may take two to three years of study, depending on your level of commitment, etc. |

Nä Nïnau Ma‘amau . . . Frequently Asked Questions |
|
The answer could be as simple as: “Learning a new language broadens your perspective on the world around you.” Another reason might run as deep as: “Learning Hawaiian will help you create a deeper connection with your ancestors and their experiences.” The fact is that the Hawaiian language was nearly extinct in recent years, but now we have the opportunity to learn, use and teach this rich language to our keiki (children), mo‘opuna (grandchildren), spouses, and friends. This is a gift that can never be replaced or taken away. It is as lasting as your aloha for your ‘ohana. It is a gift that can be passed down through the generations, blessing your future beyond measure. |

Sometimes, it is free, like when it is provided at various Hawaiian/Polynesian festivals within the Southern California community or through other church/community organizations. Check back regularly for updates on free instruction. The fees for one class per haumana is $70 before a discount is applied. Likewise, special rates for online classes are offered to groups that include but are not limited to: 1. 5 members of the same hälau or hui, 2. 5 different individuals or households of related ‘ohana, 3. 5 friends or co-workers within the same physical or online community. The rate is $55 per haumäna with the group rate! The instructor will also make onsite visits to hälau or hui meetings within 50 miles distance of Irvine, CA to provide Hawaiian language instruction to groups of more than 5. The fee for this is $50 per meeting plus minimal travel expenses, i.e. kakolina . . . gas. Online one-on-one tutoring/instruction between student and instructor is available for $40 per month, which includes one set day per week. As in any form of Hawaiian language instruction, whether it is online or onsite, the instructor will teach new information, encourage participation, and give homework assignments which will be reviewed and returned with the instructor’s feedback. All class sessions meet once a week on the designated date and time at the designated location, either online or onsite. Haumäna then do classwork independently or with other haumäna as assigned. There is a wide variety of options for Hawaiian language learners. Some options are free, as with Ke Kahiau workshops at various festivals, through community organizations, or even other online options. The fees are affordable. Learning Hawaiian with us now much more convenient because it is available to you online! If you join with a group, the prices are even lower. While there are free options available, if haumäna truly want to learn and use the Hawaiian language, the benefits from learning collaboratively within an online class or at our monthly in-person meetings are much more valuable due to these many benefits : 1. The convenience of asking questions to a live instructor. 2. Receiving the answers you need to understand the material. 3. Coaching and encouragement from an experienced and understanding language professional that you will most likely need, because learning a new language can sometimes be daunting. 4. Receiving detailed, personalized feedback from homework assignments, pronunciation, etc. 5. Learning from other haumäna as group work/discussion is encouraged throughout the class. Collaborative learning provides a richness to a learning situation that cannot be replaced by individual learning. We are always learning from one another’s comments, mistakes, questions, and insights. 6. The end-of-session class potluck lü‘au! The mea‘ai ‘ono (delicious food) is worth every moment of language study and can’t be duplicated with solitary, independent study. For online learners in distant locations, more creative and nonconventional instructions for participation in lü‘au will be provided. ;) 7. Other snippets of culture infused into Hawaiian language instruction can be had such as learning one’s own genealogy chant, etc.
